You can see all the smiles on these peoples faces. That is because they are mesmerized by the phantasmagorical luminesce of the filim they are watching. This one was Gascoin - a thinly layered allegory of the Australian search for self played out in arch cliches and ironical archetypes - at once poking fun at Australian jingoistic identity and at the same time speaking honestly to the realities in which we search for it. This was followed by two wonderful video art works by Goran Tomic and Elisa Trunzo. After everyone was good and drunk and the most of them had wandered off home, I dragged out The Orbit, the feature length filim Georgie and I had made back in 2004 when we were first together. Let me just say, extreme embarrassment mixed with a genuine sense of pride is one potent cocktail, especially when it’s chased down with a whole lot of alcohol.
